Core elements

The Postvention Assisting those Bereaved By Suicide (PABBS) course aims to increase knowledge, skills and confidence of professionals who come into contact with those affected by suicide.

Training materials to support the learning include:

  • A taught training module and e-learning module to take away.
  • High-quality short videos which highlight the issue of suicide in context.
  • Academic articles which present finidings from PABBS research.
  • Also includes: taught sessions, films, group discussions and exercises.

Supporting rationale

PABBS training was developed from a three-year research study (The PABBS Study) led by Dr Shardon McDonnell.

 The PABBS Study explored:

  • The experiences and needs of people bereaved by suicide
  • The experiences and needs of health professionals responsible for
  • The care of people bereaved by suicide (i.e. GPs, mental health professionals and ambulance staff)
  • The best existing evidence about suicide bereavement support and policy/training materials

PABBS training helps to address key objectives in the following key documents:

  • The NHS Long Term Plan (2019)
  • NHS Staff and Learners Mental Wellbeing Commission NHS Health Education England (2019)
