The Zero Suicide Alliance (ZSA) is a national initiative hosted by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust (Mersey Care) and sustained through external funding, including charitable contributions
Mersey Care ensures accountability and oversees the delivery of ZSA projects, with our ZSA team working alongside experts in the Safe from Suicide Team. All ZSA staff are employed by Mersey Care and comply with NHS standards, policies, and training.
How the ZSA was funded
The ZSA was established in 2017 with funding from the Department of Health and Social Care. Following this, projects to develop accessible suicide awareness training and digital tools have been funded through various partnerships.
How the ZSA is funded now!
1. Commissioned/ funded work and income generation
To remain sustainable, the Zero Suicide Alliance generates income through several revenue streams. We bid for funding, deliver commissioned projects, and have expanded our income-generating opportunities through virtual suicide awareness sessions for organisations and our corporate e‑learning package that integrates with workplace learning platforms - ensuring businesses can embed suicide prevention into everyday practice.
2. Charitable funds
Charitable support raised through Mersey Cares NHS Charity (including donations, corporate sponsorships, fundraising, and grants) enables us to expand our projects and campaigns.
Continued sponsorships and grants are vital. They allow us to:
- Develop and deliver new training opportunities for communities most at risk
- Maintain and improve digital suicide awareness tools
- Support more people to recognise the actions they can take to prevent suicide
- Strengthen the national conversation, building confidence to talk about suicide and challenge stigma
Mersey Care’s Charity Committee oversees all charitable spending to ensure transparency and impact.
